Civic Center Long-Span Roof

Overview

The challenge

Snow drift against the neighboring building and unbalanced loading governed the arch design.

Approach

• Form-found the arch profile to minimize bending under the governing load combinations
• Used a steel tie to keep thrust off the foundations
• Checked the arch’s in-plane and out-of-plane buckling with nonlinear analysis

Outcome

A 60 m column-free interior with exposed arches as the main architectural feature.
