The challenge
A long, light cantilever is prone to perceptible bounce, and the rock quality at the rim varied.
Approach
- Tapered the box girders to match the moment diagram and save weight at the tip
- Worked with the geotechnical engineer on anchor pull-out testing
- Specified a tuned mass damper hidden in the tip
Outcome
Tip deflection under crowd load was held well within limits, and the platform feels solid underfoot.
